A Journey Carried with Purpose
NORTVI: What drew you to travel through Africa, and how did the journey shape the way you moved through it?Jakob Stolz: I was looking for a journey that would interrupt my normal rhythm. Arriving in Africa does that immediately. The scale, the sounds, the smells, the heat, the way time is experienced – it all pulls you out of autopilot. Very quickly, I realized that rushing doesn’t work there. Roads change, plans shift, days unfold differently than expected. You’re forced to slow down, to arrive not just physically but mentally. That mindset shaped the entire trip and made me much more attentive to where I was and what was happening around me.
NORTVI: You traveled with both the Trunk and the Essential. Why did that setup make sense for this journey?Jakob: The journey involved long transfers, rough terrain, and a lot of moving between very different environments. The Trunk became the backbone of the trip – it carried everything I needed for weeks: clothing, camera equipment, hiking gear. The reinforced polycarbonate shell and aluminum frame gave me confidence that my equipment was protected, even when the conditions weren’t ideal. The Essential was more about flexibility. I used it for flights and shorter regional trips, keeping my daily essentials close. It’s compact, lightweight, and very clean in its design, which I appreciated. Together, they gave me a feeling of being prepared without being overloaded.
NORTVI: How did the luggage perform once you left airports and infrastructure behind?Jakob: That’s where you really learn if something works. We drove on sandy tracks, rocky roads, and places where a road simply no longer existed. The Trunk was constantly being lifted into vehicles, dragged across uneven ground, and exposed to dust. The wheels surprised me – they rolled smoothly even when the surface wasn’t smooth at all. More importantly, nothing felt fragile. That kind of reliability creates calm, especially when you’re far away from anything familiar.
NORTVI: Was there a moment during the trip that stayed with you on a deeper level?Jakob: One evening at camp, just before sunset, an elephant herd appeared next to us. They had a young calf, which immediately changes the dynamic. At first, there was a quiet, almost respectful stillness. Then one of our team members unknowingly walked between the herd and the matriarch. The situation escalated very quickly – the elephants charged, vocal and powerful. They stopped close, then slowly moved away. The matriarch stayed behind, standing between us and the herd, watching until they disappeared into the bush. It was incredibly intense and humbling. In moments like that, you understand very clearly that you’re a guest. Nature sets the rules.
NORTVI: How did experiences like that influence your creative work during the trip?Jakob: Africa changes how you see. The light is different – warmer, heavier, sometimes muted – and that stays in the images. But it’s not just visual. You hear people’s stories, you adapt to unfamiliar routines, you sit by a campfire at night hearing lions roar nearby. All of that seeps into your work. Photography, for me, is how I stay present. The camera doesn’t distance me from the moment, it’s how I process and connect with it.
NORTVI: What does “traveling with intention” mean to you today, and how did this journey reinforce that?Jakob: Traveling with intention means being aware of your impact and your presence in a place. Everything already has its own rhythm – you’re not there to impose yours. This journey reinforced how important preparation and responsibility are. When your equipment works and your luggage is reliable, you’re free to focus on what really matters. Sustainability plays a big role in how I travel, which is why NORTVI feels aligned with my values. Quality, durability, timeless design, and a conscious approach to materials all matter to me. This trip also changed how I think about adventure – it’s no longer about covering as much ground as possible, but about depth, attention, and respect.
